High-Speed Internet

Digital/Broadband Phone

High-Speed Internet

Why are my downstream and upstream speeds different?

The downstream data speed refers to the connection rate or "synch rate" to your computer from the Internet or your company's network (LAN). The upstream speed refers to the connection speed from your computer to the Internet or your company's network.

Most Internet and business LAN applications require you to download large amounts of data while sending relatively small amounts of data, Consolidated Communications reserves most of your bandwidth to download data.

How do I keep my computer or network safe from viruses?

Consolidated Communications Internet Services filters out all non IP traffic for High-Speed Internet customers. However, this does not guarantee the security of your computer or network.

  1. Install and regularly update antivirus software.
  2. Install firewall software on each computer in your home
  3. PC updates – Check for updates for your computer's operating system and for programs/applications regularly).
  4. Education

You can receive viruses via email from people that you know and trust – primarily because many viruses are sent by people who didn't know their computer was infected! Your system CAN be infected with a virus even though you have installed anti-virus software and you update your software regularly. You can receive a virus through your email program even if you haven't opened an attachment. An email does not have to contain an attachment to contain a virus.

Email isn't the only way that a virus can infect your system. Viruses can be sent through the web, via FTP (file transfer protocol), through chat clients, and even by visiting web pages. They can even infect your computer through a security hole in a software package or your operating system (Windows for example). This is why performing all critical updates for your computer is imperative.

Exercise caution when downloading files from the Internet. Ensure that the source is a legitimate and reputable one. Verify that an anti-virus program checks the files on the download site.
